I really wasn't prepared to actually learn anything from this book. I truly thought this book would be a recap of what I already knew. I was wrong! Like a lot of women, I was guilty of over-simplifying the male sexual cycle. This book addressed many misconceptions women have about the male sexual cycle and male orgasm. It also touches on the unique individuality of every man; just like women no two men are exactly alike in need and preferences in touch.

I had recently read, "Tickle His Pickle: Your Hands-On Guide to Penis Pleasing," by Sadie Allison, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I had tried out some of her techniques and positions -- and I was surprised to find that her suggestions in both areas had worked out much better than I had expected. Given these successes, I was curious to see if another book, "The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio," by Violet Blue, would teach me even more.

The first half of the book deals with basics, like mental preparation, anatomy, STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) and hygiene. As the "Ultimate Guide," this work's treatment of `swallowing,' though, is woefully scattered and unfocused. And I definitely could've done without the section on how to give oral love to a strap-on, which seemed to me like a total waste of time.

Where this book really shines, though, is in the area of deep throating. There's some nice diagrams which really helped me to understand how the gag reflex is...

A guy's perspective
I am a guy. So I waited until I was not the first reviewer. Take my perspective with a grain of salt. I am a nanny for two girls (2 and 4), married for almost 15 years and my wife and I lead a small group for newly married couples to help them develop stronger marriages. I spend a fair amount of time reading and thinking about issues of sex and marriage.

Because most of my perspective is on married sex (and within a church based, Christian context), there are subjects I wish were handled differently. But on the whole I think it was a very good book and I glad that books like this are written.

That being said, the book really is two books that are written together. One part (these parts are mixed together, not a part one, part two) is the sexual health and care questions and answers. This was of less interest to me (I am a guy) but I did learn a few things and had a couple conversations with my wife over them.

Super helpful!
First, I want to preface that I am a Christian, married mother of three. Okay, so this book is full of a lot of beneficial information regarding all things that have to do with our "female parts". Even if your mother was more open and shared with you some information about your vulva area, this book is very helpful! I would have given it four stars, because there were some parts of the book I could have done without having to read, but since that is purely personal preference and my own sensitivity, I had to give it five.
It is not a book to read to your hormonal teenage daughter, but excellent for older, more mature women. It also has helped me a lot in how I speak to my girls about their bodies and how to care for them. It also dispels some old wives tales that most of us grew up on on the the care of our delicate areas. It is a book that helps to not only understand, but also appreciate what God made! amazing, revelatory, empowering

as a survivor of rape and sexual abuse, i have read a bunch of books on the aftereffects of assault, being a survivor, et cetera, but most of the stuff out there is pretty dry and basic and i just didn't find it very helpful. this book is direct, incredibly right-on, it gives you hands on techniques for staying present in your body, it includes an amazing discussion of triggering. it also uses down to earth language and is not too self-help-y, and it acknowledges that certain terms might be alienating and medicalizing for some people.
FYI: although it is targetted at female survivors of child sexual abuse, i myself am not a woman, and the sexual assault/abuse i experienced occured during my teenage years, not my childhood. i still found the book very useful. there is also a great chapter aimed at partners of survivors.

I have been waiting for this book for years!!

When I first found this book I was hoping it would be different, as a healing survior I have read alot of help books, and although comforting, they usually told me why I had the problems I did but didnt give me much advice on how to start living and having fun again in life, this book was amazing at that, it was what I had been looking to read since I started wanting to heal!! It would be a great book for anyone wanting good sexual information in a society that dosnt offer that much, I found it straight forward and honest and funny ..great book!! I loooved it!!:)

I've been waiting for someone to write a book like this
For the past eight years, I have been slowly, painstakingly discovering for myself many of the techniques that Staci Haines details in this book. As far as I am aware, I am not a survivor of child sexual abuse, but I have many of the same difficulties - lack of trust, unclear boundaries, easily triggered, difficulty being sexually present.
I looked at books on recovery; they seemed only to tell me that it was OK to not have sex. I looked at TONS of books on sex and none addressed my difficulties - until The Survivor's Guide to Sex. I can say from my own experience that it's not easy to put Staci's suggestions into practice, nor do the rewards necessarily come quickly. But for some of us, this is the only way we're going to reclaim our sexuality.

The book also has illustrations that are very helpful in understanding the different positions easily. Each position is presented with a nice illustration, heart-rating system, and a brief description of it. Very informative, if I may say.

I read this book mostly because I think Barbara is awesome and also because I want to learn how to have better, more fulfilling sex and I identify as being in the relentless pursuit of my joy. This book was beyond anything I imagined it was going to be.

This book is an empowerment manual for embodiment. It is a road map to learn how to go into your body and get to know yourself on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. I spend at least 6 hours a week diligently working on these connections for myself and there was a lot I learned about myself within the first seventy pages.

I entered my Master's degree program in Religious Studies in 1990 with the intention of writing my thesis on some component of sex and religion. For months I struggled with the ambiguity of my topic before choosing another topic; one considered more realistically manageable, as well as less controversial. I never lost interest in the subject matter, however. "Ecstasy is Necessary" is a non-regrettable reminder of my idle research and an inspiration for me to find a place in my writing for my lingering personal and academic curiosity for the way humans reconcile their sensual desires to their spiritual endeavors.

Having read many instructional manuals on the subject of sex, far too many are written from the perspective of clinical practice and not in layman terms. Jessica has done a fantastic job in keeping it simple, interesting and easy to follow. Techniques are visually explained in great detail and are very easy to follow. The other great point is that a lot of information is packed into a small package and this "sex manual" can be easily placed close at hand on a side table. The cover is by no means discreet so if you have kids it may be an issue if you keep this book on a side table but other than that it is probably one of the best books on the subject of sex ever written. My wife bought this for us and we both loved every minute of reading it! I am now recommending it to colleagues and friends.

This is a gorgeous book. Dr Jess has done a fantastic job blending technical know-how into an easy-to-follow guide. She starts by breaking down how our bodies work, which is the foundation to great sex! The book is laid out in an inviting way, with FAQs and little blurbs for sex geeks throughout. These little touches make for a fun and informative read. We start with the basics and ramp up to lots and lots of techniques for pleasuring him, pleasuring her, and of course, for pleasuring both. I am currently almost 40 weeks pregnant and planning a home birth with a midwife who just lent me this newly released book. I have been scouring for natural birth resources for months. I have read dozens of books and seen many films, including the Orgasmic Birth film. I'm so glad this book came out before my due date! I devoured it in 3 days... it is my favorite book on natural birth thus far. This book takes the film and goes much deeper into the research and implications. If you want a book on sexual positions and techniques, this book is not for you. It is really about becoming an autonomous, confidant, adult woman! It's great!

This is the third book with almost the same title. "The Strap-on Book" and "The Ultimate Guide to Strap-on Sex" covered this subject adequately long ago and not much has changed.

The real problem with these narrow-focus books is that they are little more than magazine articles plumped up with worthless filler so they can be sold over and over. These 160 pages could be reduced to a single chapter in another book . . . But wait, they already have.

For the best $$$ deal, buy "Anal Sex for Women" or "Anal Sex for Couples." The former has better pictures and the latter has more details with less fluff. Plus you get all the extras in a better package.

I was hoping this book would contain more advice and tips on sex with a plus size woman. It didn't really have much helpful advice, instead articles geared toward upping a womans self-esteem so that she can do these things. There was a lot of interesting information in it, though, and I'll definitely look back at it for references on things.

One of the first books I owned and read about sex was the classic The Joy of Sex by Alex Comfort. I was both riveted and embarrassed even though, in hindsight, that how-to manual did approach the subject with greater sensitivity than many recent books. Most books on sex are really how-to manuals without in-depth context. They speak to the mechanics of sex, but rarely discuss the nuts-and-bolts of physical intimacy of love making within committed relationships. The other book I read as a new bride, erred on the side of the esoteric, citing studies and providing clinical explanations that might have bored some to tears and almost frightened me.

For the uninitiated or those with limited experience, but a strong desire or need to go beyond just the possible viable positions and methods of pleasuring one another, there is a lovely solution in Jennie Rosenfeld's and David S. Down to brass tacks and no euphemisms. In Kindle edition, illustrations are after "Parting Words"
Living in a modern orthodox community that is (one of) the intended audience for this book, I see how DESPERATELY it is needed. It is clear, does not use euphemisms, and is incredibly down-to-brass-tacks practical. Right down to the various types of lubricant and a warning not to use too much or add more later. This kind of knowledge is golden for its audience. I didn't expect to learn much (I'm a 3 month newlywed), as I was an informal relationship counselor on my college campus, but there were tips I'd never heard. Additionally, I saw it from a new perspective as a newlywed who had not been sexually active for several years. I am especially glad how strongly the authors repeated that your own comfort is the essential ingredient (and that without your own comfort, it's not going to work well physically).

My only disappointment was the answer to a female's question about her husband refusing to do more than one position after a year of marriage. Respecting his comfort level...

Although a newer sex book, it is already my favorite sex book to recommend (I work as a sex educator for adults). It's well written, easy to read, has great diagrams, fun quizzes at the start of every chapter and - best of all - the information is GREAT. It's right on, it's accurate and written by someone who totally knows what she is talking about.

A major frustration of mine is that a lot of sex books are written by random people who don't know what they're talking about but act like they do. These are the same people who wind up doing things that their partners find unpleasurable but they do them because they read it in a book or magazine (that was wrong!). FINALLY - a book written by an expert who is fun, smart, and clearly loves sex! Dr. Debby writes about sex the way it should be written about - like it's fun and something we can learn to find pleasurable, exciting and connecting with our partners.

This is the kind of book that you will read over and over...

This book was okay, but not really for women who are in tune with their bodies, and looking to spice up their love life. This seems to be more geared to those not comfortable with sex and their own bodies.

Better than most
I got this book and read it and was very happy with it. Most sex advice books suck, they only tell you stuff that anyone who is in a committed relationship with good communication would know, they are written for teens because they are the only ones who would not know that advice. This book on the other hand tells you about what girls want but don't know how to ask for, and tells you how to slowly introduce some new, fun sexual activities to your relationship. The only detraction I can say about this book is it is very simple, now that may sound like a good thing but I would have liked to explore some more of the psychological aspects of the sex described in the book and why we have lost this in our modern relationships because of the ways we are raised, but I like to explore things deeply. Over all though it was a good short read that actually did help my sex life a little. I would place this book right between "sex advice" and "kinky" and I would recommend this book to couples that...

I read this book from cover to cover in a few days. It is well written in an easy to read conversational style. Dr. Corwin is a clinical psychologist who has written this book for the lay public but it would be helpful for clinicians as well. She is different than many writers on this topic in that she describes both the published academic research and clinical examples. She has made the research accessible to her audience with her easily understood descriptions of the findings. Her book makes many good points and covers relevant topics that contribute to sexual issues in couples including desire discrepancy,body image issues,sexual abuse issues, aging and hormones, fidelity and parenting.
