Advanced work
I subscribe to several woodworking magazines and have subscribed to Woodworkers Journal since 1990. Each magazine has a character of it's own with a woodworking level reflected in the complexity of the projects it presents. This magazine is a bit more complex than, say Wood magazine. It should be understood that some style and esthetics are usually compromised when a project is simplified. I have one of Woodworking Journal's projects in my living room. It is perhaps the most beautiful piece I have ever made. If you have become an advanced amature (sp?) this magazine will give you projects that you will take pride in making and showing to others.

A good all around choice
As a library administrator I get to see and read an awful lot of woodworking books and magazines. I have been a personal subscriber to Woodworker's Journal for a year now, and an off and on reader of the magazine for about 5 years. In that time I have grown to appreciate this as a very good woodworking magazine. Is it my favorite? No, but I still like it well enough to recommend it to others. I also regularly read Fine Woodworking, Workbench, Wood, Popular Woodworking, etc. and like all of those, this magazine has its strengths. I find that WJ is very into power tools, tool reviews (theirs are among my favorites), and shop projects. Having said all of that, I also must confess that the best piece of furniture I ever built came from a plan in WJ magazine (an arts & crafts style wine storage table), so don't pigeon-hole it too much.

Try it for a year and I bet you won't be sorry!

Just the Right Approach
There are two good ways to tell what audience at which a woodworking magazine is aimed. The first is the type of advertising, and the second is how much skill do the projects expect you to have. It is pretty clear right away that Woodworker's journal server home woodworkers who are already of moderate skill. The advertised 'big toys' run in the 500 to 1500 dollar range, although there are a couple of high end combination machines in the adds as well.

Articles expect you to know how to use the tools of the trade but not sure about the 'best' way to do something. A recent issue makes a study of an intarsia backed high chair with some interesting joinery, and instructions for making a genuinely exotic angle jig for a table saw. Writing is solid and reasonably illustrated, but they devote little space to what you should already know, which can make these projects a stretch for a tyro.

The Magazine is very tool oriented. There isn't a lot of space devoted to...

Great magazine
This is a great magazine for quilters. Each issue conatins several projects... a mix of both traditional and art quilts. My current issue (April/May 2011) contains an article on airbrushing fabric that I thought was really interesting. This magazine also contains news as related to the quilting world (exhibits, competition results, quilter's biographies, etc.).

Before subscribing to this magazine, go to their website first. Sometimes they have bonus items they'll give you with your subscription. Even if you don't subscribe to the magazine, you can find lots of free patterns on their website.

One of the last quilt magazines with information beyond patterns
I admit to liking QNM better when there were no quilt patterns. It was a great source for information about current and past quilt endeavors. I still believe that it is a magazine worth the subscription price.

Not for beginners but dare to dream...
I chose a less than perfect rating for this magazine because if you are new to quilting you might want to buy this magazine and stash it for later use as you learn new techniques and move your way up to some of these tougher quilts patterns. Instructions are very good but you will need some experience to work your way through most of these quilts featured in this journal. But we all had to start somewhere. So go ahead and use it as that goal you are working your way towards meeting. Dreaming about quilts it called inspiration and this journal will give you plenty of that.

Mom loved this magazine!
I purchased a subscription to this magazine last year for Christmas for my mom, who is a master quilter, and she loves it. She said most of the patterns/projects are considered "easy" but she likes it for that reason. Asked for a subscription renewal for this Christmas, and got it!

Maybe quick, but not for a new quilter
I am new to quilting, and am trying to help my church make quilts for charity. Working full time, I thought this might be a great help. Maybe these are quick quilts for those with a lot of experience, but it's not quick for my purposes. It may have also been my mistake by equating "quick" to "easy".

Great for beginning quilters
I love thumbing through this magazine. Just perfect for a new quilter like myself; nothing seems too challenging, but you can create some very pretty items! Great variety of quilts, something for everyone.

Great sewing resource!
I have been sewing on and off for about 20 years and am always looking for ways to improve my sewing. I really like this magazine. Each issue contains instructions for several projects, but what I really like about this magazine is that it is full of tips and tricks that I can really use. Just as an example, my current issue (April/May 2011) contains articles on adjusting tension, working with knits, draping principles, pant fitting tips, fashion sketching and much, much more.

This is a great all-around sewing resource that covers all aspects of sewing. This magazine seems to be mainly geared towards the beginner or intermediate sewer, but I think even an advanced sewer may find it useful.

Great for beginners or experts!
I have been buying this magazine for years! I keep the old issues for students and also for reference. What a great source of inspiration in every issue! I highly recommend it for anyone who sews or is interested in learning how to sew.

Lay Off on the Subs Requests Already!
I bought this magazine via Amazon Mag Subs and have loved every issue. As a beginner sewist (sewer? seamstress?) I value their easy instructions, terrific photos, fun projects, and user-friendly layout. I give the magazine five yummly stars! I would happily subscribe to this magazine for years to come!

However, what seriously bugs me is the number of "renew your subscription" letters I receive in almost every issue, practically from the start of my subscription! Minus two stars. :(

Today I received yet ANOTHER letter that says (and I quote directly from the letter):
"This is the 4th time we've written with no word from you. We're concerned that you haven't responded."
They go on to state (again quoted directly from the letter, capitals are theirs):
"THE SHORT OF IT IS THIS... Service interruption is pending - so we need to hear from you by 05/30/12"

Firstly, my subscription only expires in October 2012!!! Seriously???
Secondly, I...

Review :
It's an OK little magazine
I haven't found tons of stuff I want to make in it, though, and a some of the patterns that are published in this magazine, I've found for free on the net or as give-aways from yarn & thread companies! So...I don't think I'll subscribe again, but it was a nice little mag to get in the mail.

Lots of variety in a small magazine.
This little magazine is full of a variety of beautiful, charming and useful patterns from seasonal decorations, doilies and afghans to very pretty clothing and accessories. The patterns don't employ lots of special stitches so it's easy going for just about anyone. Having checked out nearly every crochet magazine currently offered, I'd say this is well worth the subscription price for all but those who want only specialty and/or really challenging projects.

Great magazine except
they could include more clothing patterns that are easy to follow. Most of the projects are for children's toys and doily's. For a prolific crocheter I suppose it's best to develop your own patterns because you will quickly get bored with the scant clothing items included in the magazine.
This magazine prompted me to crochet years ago. I saw a pattern for a crochet bikini that I had to duplicate. I did it but I took it apart & never made another one. So I suppose I owe my crocheting career to this magazine. It's a shame they don't include more innovative clothing designs with different types of yarns.

Favorite
Of all the quilt and craft magazines I get, this is my favorite. It is just the right blend of traditional quilting and modern stuff. I like the amount and quality of instructions. I like the variety of projects. I have made a number of projects from this magazine and wouldn't be without a subscription.

McCall's Quilting
I enjoy trying some of the patterns in this magazine, also the thoroughness of the instructions is most helpful. I love looking at the different designs and color selections.

McCall's Quilting
This quilting magazine is filled with wonderful ideas. The colors choices are great and you have a choice of easy to hard quilts. I love the magazine.
